Park rules

Orianna Hill Park is a community-owned space that depends on responsible use. Everyone who uses the park is expected to follow the rules, respect the space, and take responsibility for their own actions, guests, dogs, and property.

General park rules

  • All individuals use the park at their own risk.
  • All individuals are responsible for their own actions, as well as for the dogs, guests, children, and personal items they bring into the park.
  • Orianna Hill Park, its Board of Directors, and its members are not responsible for harm to users, dogs, guests, property, or personal belongings.
  • Violence, threats, harassment, or unsafe behavior are not tolerated. Anyone engaging in this behavior may be asked to leave immediately.
  • All users must clean up after themselves and dispose of trash in designated receptacles.
  • All users are expected to respect the park, the neighbors, and other park users.
  • The park reserves the right to revoke or restrict use if a person or dog creates repeated safety concerns or violates park rules.

Dog Run

The Dog Run sits between Orianna Street and N. 3rd Street. It is for registered dogs and their owners only. No visiting or unregistered dogs.

By registering, dog owners agree that the park may share their contact information if their dog is involved in an incident or altercation at the park.

Owner responsibility

  • Dog owners are responsible for their dogs at all times.
  • Dogs must remain within their owner's line of sight.
  • Owners must actively watch their dogs and be able to maintain control over them.
  • Owners may not bring more than three dogs to the park at one time.
  • Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • If a dog behaves aggressively toward a person or another dog, the owner must remove the dog from the park immediately.
  • If an incident occurs, the individuals involved are responsible for resolving the issue directly with each other.

Dogs not permitted

  • Unregistered dogs.
  • Dogs with a known history of fighting, biting, or aggression.
  • Dogs under four months old.
  • Dogs not currently vaccinated against rabies.
  • Adult dogs that are not fixed or altered. Female dogs older than 8 months and male dogs older than 1 year must be spayed or neutered to use the park.
  • Female dogs under 8 months while in heat.
  • Dogs with a diagnosed communicable disease or condition.

Health and safety

  • Dogs must wear a flat collar or harness while inside the Dog Run.
  • Prong, pinch, or similar collars are strongly discouraged inside the Dog Run because they may cause injury during play.
  • Owners must clean up after their dogs immediately.
  • All trash and dog waste must be placed in designated receptacles.
  • Owners are responsible for any mess created by themselves, their guests, or their dogs.

Quiet hours, 10pm to 7am

  • During quiet hours, keep barking and noise to a minimum out of respect for nearby neighbors.
  • Dogs that are loud players should use the park outside of quiet hours.

Entering and exiting

  • The Dog Run has entrances on Orianna Street and N. 3rd Street.
  • Use entrances and exits one at a time.
  • Always make sure both interior and exterior gates are closed and secured.
  • Remove or attach leashes in the area between the gates.
  • Do not open a gate if another dog is entering or exiting.

Dog park etiquette

Beyond the rules above, these habits make the Dog Run safer and friendlier for dogs, owners, and neighbors.

  • If someone is using the Dog Run alone, announce your arrival before entering. Some owners use the park during quieter times on purpose.
  • If you see a dog go to the bathroom and the owner does not notice, politely let them know so they can clean it up.
  • If your dog is sick, has an upset stomach, or is having irregular bowel movements, skip the Dog Run until your dog is healthy again.
  • Human food is discouraged inside the Dog Run because it may attract dogs, cause reactivity, or lead to dogs eating something unsafe. Drinks are allowed, but owners are responsible for anything they bring in.
  • Be mindful when bringing treats or toys from home. They may attract other dogs or lead to resource guarding, even if your dog is usually comfortable sharing.
  • Learn your dog's body language and redirect your dog when needed.
  • Dogs have different play styles. If your dog plays rough, is very vocal, or is meeting another dog for the first time, check in with the other owner to make sure they are comfortable with the interaction.
  • Pay attention to the energy of the park. If play becomes too intense, separate the dogs and give them time to reset.
  • Avoid crowding the gate when another dog is entering or exiting.
  • Keep conversations friendly and respectful. The park works best when owners talk to each other directly and calmly.

People Park

The People Park is at the corner of Orianna and Poplar Streets. This area is for people only.

  • Dogs are not permitted in the People Park, even on leash.
  • All trash must be placed in designated receptacles.
  • Do not pick flowers, remove plants, move flower bed borders, or remove anything from the park.
  • Respect the seating areas, plantings, and shared community space.
  • Leave the area clean for the next visitor.

Community Garden

The Community Garden runs along Poplar Street. Garden plots are rented to neighbors each season and are private.

  • The Community Garden is not open to the public.
  • Do not enter the Community Garden unless you are a current gardener or are accompanied by one.
  • Do not take fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants, or other items from the garden.
  • Garden plots and anything grown in them are the private property of the community gardeners.
  • Respect the garden, the gardeners' work, and all planted areas.

If an incident happens

Park users are expected to resolve issues and disputes directly when possible. First, make sure people and dogs are safe.

Report an incident
  1. Gain control of your dog.
  2. Check that all people and dogs involved are safe.
  3. Exchange contact information with the other owner.
  4. Remove yourself and your dog from the park if needed.
  5. Submit an incident report if the issue should be documented.

If you cannot get the other owner’s contact information, say so in your report and the board will help. As a condition of using the Dog Run, dog owners agree that their contact information may be released if their dog is involved in an altercation or incident.
